Lucas Horns RestorationOverviewThere are many different model horns made by Lucas over the years. Several of these are shown in the accompanying photographs. All have the same basic electrical design. The sound is produced when the magnetic coil is energized pulling the diaphragm towards the coil. Before it reaches the coil the current is interrupted by a set of points, opening and closing, in the circuit. Thus the opening and closing of the points move the diaphragm in and out very rapidly, producing the sound.Photographs
TroubleshootingIf the horn will not sound or is erratic or muffled, check the electrical system for loose connections, short circuits and blown fuses. After extended periods of time the points become pitted, worn or coated with oxides, causing intermittent or total failure. Most models, with the exception of the Windtone horns, require disassembly, and difficult rivet removal, to expose the points. The points can be cleaned by opening them up and running a fine emery board between them. This will usually take care of the points.
RestorationWe completely disassemble the horn, clean all usable parts and replace worn ones. Chromed parts, if any, are cleaned and polished or replaced with restored parts. External surfaces are refinished with appropriate color and finish. The horn is then reassembled, adjusted and tested.
